Reliable Replacement Warhead
The United States is developing a new generation of secure neculear warheads.
The RRW will be based on a design by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (http://www.llnl.gov/). It might additionally include features designed at Sandia National Laboratories, who also competed for the design. The NNSA picked LLNL's design because it was based on an older design that had already been tested.
The US currently has about 6,000 legacy warheads that are being refurbished.
The Union of Concerned Scientists has declared the new nuclear warhead design unnecessary. http://www.ucsusa.org/news/commentary/new-nuclear-warhead-design-0012.html
