The Department of Energy's National Energy Policy goals include diversifying the country's energy mix and reducing dependence on foreign petroleum; reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts; creating a more flexible, more reliable, and higher-capacity U.S. energy infrastructure; and improving efficiency and productivity.
A good resource if your interested in energy is the United States Department of Energy's Energy Sources page.
Also at the Department of Energy, check out what's going on at all the national laboratories.

Startech Environmental Corporation
Startech's plasma gasification technology converts solid waste (aka trash) into energy. Their $250 million dollar plasma converters use a 650-volt current to create an arc of 30,000 degrees F, which disintegrates the trash into its building block elements. The by-products are obsidian-like glass and a hydrocarbon syngas that can be converted into fuels.
