Reducing Your Carbon Footprint
The top five things that any consumer can do to make their life energy efficient and sustainable.
Step #1 would have to be in the transportation sector, which is responsible for over 50% of the footprint people put on earth. So the car that you choose, whether it be a hybrid, or a biodiesel powered car, or an electric, or an ethanol powered vehicle. Anything but a fossil fuel vehicle that gets less than 25 miles per gallon is step number one.
Step #2 would be to change out all the lights in your house and put in compact fluorescents, thereby saving thousands of kilowatt-hours per year.
Step #3 would be replacing your water heater, whether it be electric or gas, with an instantaneous water heater so that your water is only heated when you need it.
Step #4 would be double checking all the insulation in your house. Checking all your windows, caulking up the cracks, adding insulation where you can, putting extra insulation in your attic, or reflectives in your attic (a radiant barrier).
Step #5 would probably be a solar hot water heating system which pays for itself in less than two years, heats all your water up without needing natural gas or propane or electricity.
After those first five steps have been completed, then you can take the ultimate step, which would be solarizing the home with photovoltaics to generate your own power, making your house energy independent, feeding power back to the grid from the sun, and saving lots and lots of money and feeling really good about what you do.

The European Union is working with California to bring it into their trading scheme for greenhouse gas emissions.
Members of the EU's Environment Commission, headed by Stavros Dimas, met with officials from California last week to discuss how the state's planned program could fit with the European one that has been operating for two years.
Under the EU program, companies that produce large amnounts of carbon dioxide (mainly power plants burning coal, natural gas and coal), can trade allocations for how much they can release, giving them an incentive to cut greenhouse emissions.

Siberian Methane
The frozen peat bog in Siberia is thawing for the first time since it froze 11,000 years ago. It is one of the world's largest stores of methane gas, which is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide in causing global warming.
